Filling Needs in Metro Atlanta

YP Group volunteers deliver Thanksgiving baskets to HomeStretch on November 19.

Atlanta – December 14, 2021 –Nonprofit organization HomeAid Atlanta helps people experiencing or at risk of homelessness build new lives through construction, community engagement, and education. In addition to working on twelve construction projects around metro Atlanta, HomeAid wrapped up its 20th anniversary year with outreach initiatives to help fill immediate needs and provide dignity for people experiencing homelessness.

On October 27, volunteers from Roswell’s Northview Church Middle School and Teen Ministry packed 500 HomeAid CareKits. CareKits include items like snacks and water, hand sanitizer, deodorant, a comb, a toothbrush and paste, bandages, tissues, and more. The teen volunteers made quick work of packing the kits and had a great time in their Halloween costumes. The CareKits were donated to the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

On November 12, volunteers from Ashton Woods Homes and Mortgage Bankers Association of Georgia (MBAG) packed 1,000 HomeAid CareKits for Crossroads Community Ministries (CCM). Bank of America provided funding for these CareKits. Stanley Martin Homes Atlanta Division donated hundreds of socks and underwear as well.  Socks and underwear are essential items that families and individuals living on the streets or in homeless shelters rarely have, but desperately need. CCM is distributing the Care Kits and additional items to people currently living on the streets, providing dignity and sustenance to people in need.

Also this fall, the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association’s Young Professionals Group (YP Group) partnered with HomeAid Atlanta for the 2nd Annual Thanks for Giving Drive, a fundraising drive to provide Thanksgiving food items for families transitioning out of homelessness. Thanks to generous financial donations from the community, YP Group volunteers packed 16 food baskets for families at Homestretch, an organization that guides working homeless families toward permanent housing and lasting stability. Volunteers filled the Thanksgiving baskets with canned yams, cranberry sauce, corn, green beans, cookie and brownie mixes, brown sugar, marshmallows, corn bread mix, scalloped potato mix, plus a $50 Kroger gift card and a handwritten note.  HomeAid delivered the baskets to HomeStretch on Thursday, November 19 in preparation for the Thanksgiving holiday.  Due to the overwhelming generosity of the drive’s donors, there were enough funds to provide financial donations to three additional metro Atlanta organizations providing housing and programs for people experiencing homelessness in December 2021: The Drake House, North Georgia Angel House, and the Cherokee County Veterans Program.
