Volunteers Pack 2,500 CareKits

Building industry nonprofit helps fill immediate hygiene needs to ease the burden of homelessness.

Atlanta – July 8, 2024 – HomeAid Atlanta recently hit the halfway mark toward achieving its goal of packing and distributing 5,000 CareKits to people in need in 2024. The HomeAid CareKits program was established locally in partnership with Bank of America in 2014. Since that time, HomeAid Atlanta has packed and distributed more than 19,000 HomeAid CareKits, hygiene kits filled with essential items including a toothbrush, toothpaste, socks, deodorant, and more. In the first half of 2024, HomeAid volunteers packed 2,500 CareKits for five organizations serving people experiencing homelessness. In addition to fulfilling immediate hygiene needs, HomeAid CareKits provide a means of connection for organizations that provide services and assistance with housing.

On February 9, approximately 20 Davidson Homes employees made quick work of packing 500 HomeAid CareKits. The CareKits were donated to the DeKalb Library Foundation, which provides support for the DeKalb County Public Library (DCPL). During the pandemic, DCPL librarians noticed an increase in patrons seeking assistance finding housing and other services including help with hygiene items. To help fill immediate needs, the library began stocking hygiene kits for patrons to provide community members with tools to maintain a sense of dignity. Upon receipt of the 500 CareKits packed by Davidson Homes, a DCPL staffer said, “These kits are essential for providing our patrons with a certain level of comfort that we feel everyone deserves.”

On March 27, volunteers from The Northview Church Middle School and Teen Ministry packed 1,000 HomeAid CareKits. Crossroads Community Ministries and The Elizabeth Foundation distributed the CareKits to those they serve.

Throughout May, Grant Smith, a Senior at Cornerstone Prep Academy, packed 500 HomeAid CareKits for 7 Bridges to Recovery for his Senior Legacy Project.

On June 11, Coastal States Bank employees packed 500 HomeAid CareKits for Blessings Working Together, an organization committed to supporting young families at risk of homelessness by providing counseling, life skills training, and hands-on parenting education, and more.

“Thank you, HomeAid Atlanta and Coastal States Bank, for your incredible generosity and hard work! The 500 HomeAid CareKits you packed will make a significant difference in the lives of families living in extended stay motels and beyond,” said Taressa Lumpkin Williams, Founder and Director of Blessings Working Together. “We are grateful for your support and partnership. Together, we are bringing hope and essential supplies to those who need it most.”

HomeAid Atlanta has three more CareKits events planned for this year to fulfill the goal of distributing 5,000 kits to people in need.
