ATLANTA – SEPTEMBER 26, 2023 – Building industry nonprofit HomeAid Atlanta has completed its eighth Care Day of the year. HomeAid Care Days provide free-of charge maintenance and repairs at facilities serving people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
On September 15, CBRE, the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association Professional Women in Building Atlanta Chapter, CBG Building Company, and Artisan Built Communities came together for a HomeAid Care Day at Making A Way Housing (MAWH). The volunteers worked tirelessly to transform the facility with a fresh coat of paint, cleaning, and organization. MAWH provides housing and case management for single adults facing complex challenges associated with chronic homelessness, substance abuse, mental illness, and HIV and AIDS.
Thanks to the efforts of volunteers and Sherwin-Williams’ donation of 20 gallons of paint, the HomeAid Care Day provided a savings of over $9,500 for MAWH. The funds saved can be used to directly help people who come to MAWH in search of a safe place to make a new start, like Paul.
Paul began using drugs and alcohol at age 14. His drug use became a daily habit causing him to lose his job working at a major airline. He struggled to juggle working, being a responsible adult to his two children, and using drugs. After two failed marriages and years of instability, he lived on the streets of Atlanta for 25 years. During that time, he was arrested several times and sought treatment when he hit rock bottom, living under a bridge. After getting sober with help from the Salvation Army, Paul moved to Making A Way Housing. Once he completed the program at MAWH, he was hired as overnight staff. He then began to pursue certification to become a substance abuse counselor and attend college. “I am so grateful to Making A Way Housing for giving me an opportunity to pursue my dream. I know now that anything is possible,” said Paul.
The Care Day on September 15 marked HomeAid Atlanta’s fourth Care Day at Making A Way Housing since 2016. Additionally, HomeAid has completed two major renovations at MAWH over the years, providing over 30 beds for people struggling with homelessness and related issues.
