September: Volunteers Get Hands-On
Atlanta – October 7, 2022 – For the last 21 years, HomeAid Atlanta has been providing assistance to metro Atlanta nonprofits serving people experiencing or at risk for homelessness through housing and community engagement. Throughout September 2022, HomeAid engaged over 60 volunteers in continuing its mission to build a future without homelessness.
HomeAid held a Care Day on September 9 at The Salvation Army Metro Atlanta Red Shield Services. HomeAid Care Days provide maintenance, repairs, and more, free of charge at locations serving people experiencing homelessness. Volunteers from the Young Professionals Group of the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association and Professional Women in Building Atlanta Chapter completed several landscaping tasks, including planting a vegetable garden that shelter residents will help tend to provide additional fresh food for meals. The work of HomeAid volunteers provided a savings of $5,400 for The Salvation Army Red Shield Services, which provides refuge and safe lodging for homeless men, women and families with children in crisis.

On September 13, Taylor Morrison Atlanta employees packed 500 HomeAid CareKits for Project U First, an organization with that supports the most vulnerable members of our community by providing basic hygiene products. This group of volunteers had a great time together packing CareKits, which include hygiene items, snacks, water, and socks generously provided by Bombas. CareKits are a vital tool for the organizations that distribute them. They help engage people who live on the streets, providing a starting point to build trust, a gateway to more resources, and a safer place to live.
On September 23, volunteers from Brand Vaughan Lumber Company, Ashton Woods, and Opendoor joined HomeAid for a Care Day at Breakthru House. The group completed tasks including demolition of an old shed, cleaning, painting, landscaping, pressure washing, and much more, providing savings of $4,500 on maintenance costs. Breakthru House transforms the lives of women and their children struggling with drug and alcohol addiction by providing a long-term residential program to empower women to achieve healing through recovery.
Also in September, as part of their Global Service Month, Westlake Corporation Atlanta packed more than 200 HomeAid CareKits. Westlake employees held a fundraising drive to purchase items to fill the kits, which were delivered to Crossroads Community Ministries for distribution. Crossroads provides access to resources that empower people experiencing homelessness to progress toward economic and personal stability. “Thank you so much for the wonderful gift of hygiene kits, and all of your support for Crossroads,” said Tony Johns, Crossroads Executive Director.
In September, as part of their Global Service Month, Westlake Corporation Atlanta packed more than 200 HomeAid CareKits. Westlake employees held a fundraising drive to purchase items to fill the kits, which were delivered to Crossroads Community Ministries for distribution.
HomeAid’s September 23 workday at Breakthru House marked the 13th Care Day of 2022. This year’s Care Days have provided a savings of well over $60,000 in maintenance costs for organizations serving people experiencing homelessness, and there are three more Care Days planned for this year. HomeAid volunteers have packed and distributed more than 2,200 CareKits so far this year, with more coming up this month.
HomeAid Atlanta is a nonprofit organization founded in 2001, with a mission to help people experiencing or at risk of homelessness build new lives through construction, community engagement, and education.
