HomeAid Transforms Status: Home

Volunteers make major upgrades at homes for families impacted by HIV/AIDS

Atlanta – November 16, 2023 – Building industry nonprofit HomeAid Atlanta recently completed two major Care Days, volunteer workdays, at Status: Home, formerly Jerusalem House. Status: Home is the oldest and largest provider of permanent housing, holistic support, and empowerment for Atlanta’s low-income and homeless individuals and families impacted by HIV/AIDS.

The two HomeAid Care Days took place at Status: Home’s newly acquired townhome apartment complex in East Point. When all work is complete, the apartments will provide 30 units of affordable housing for families impacted by HIV/AIDS. New residents are expected to move in prior to year-end.

On October 20, nearly 40 volunteers from Northwest Exterminating, Brand Vaughan Lumber, and BOMA Georgia spent the day with HomeAid painting seven two-bedroom townhomes at Status: Home. The group also removed carpet in ten units in preparation for new floor coverings.

HomeAid volunteers from Brightwater Homes, DR Horton Atlanta West, and American Homes 4 Rent joined the November 10 Care Day. The groups painted six apartments, as well as started work on laundry room renovations. Brightwater Homes’ Steven Sanders-Myers led the work of turning one former laundry room into offices for Status: Home staff, plus plumbing and electrical upgrades and adding a seating area in a new laundry room for residents.  Finishing touches on the laundry and staff spaces will be completed this month.

On November 10, volunteers from Brightwater Homes, DR Horton Atlanta West, and American Homes 4 Rent joined a Care Day at Status: Home.

The efforts of volunteers combined with in-kind donations of materials, including 160 gallons of paint donated by Sherwin-Williams, provided a savings of $25,000 for Status: Home.

“During this season of Thanksgiving, we are thankful for these amazing volunteers who gave selflessly to help those in need in our community. The work of Care Days is hard and often messy, but each one of our volunteers enables HomeAid to continue our mission to build a future without homelessness,” said HomeAid Atlanta Director of Community Engagement Karen McLane.

The two workdays at Status: Home were HomeAid’s final Care Days of 2023. Altogether HomeAid Atlanta completed 13 Care Days, providing a savings of nearly $390,000 for metro Atlanta nonprofits providing hope and homes for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
