Davidson Homes Packs 500 HomeAid CareKits
Homebuilder packs hygiene kits for people experiencing homelessness.
Atlanta – February 16, 2024 – HomeAid Atlanta’s mission is to build new lives for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness through construction, education and community engagement. One way that HomeAid engages the community is to pack and distribute CareKits full of essential hygiene items to those affected by homelessness.
Approximately 20 Davidson Homes employees made very quick work of packing 500 HomeAid CareKits on February 9 at HomeAid Atlanta’s office at the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association. The CareKits were donated to the DeKalb Library Foundation, which provides support to the DeKalb County Public Library through programs and services, including providing hygiene kits for patrons experiencing homelessness.
Since the pandemic, DeKalb County Public Library (DCPL) librarians noticed an increase in patrons seeking assistance for housing and other services. One day a library visitor asked staff if the library had any hygiene items for those in need. Soon after, the library began stocking hygiene kits for patrons to provide community members with tools to maintain a sense of dignity. HomeAid Atlanta helped DCPL provide more than 1,000 kits to the community in 2023. Upon receipt of the 500 CareKits packed by Davidson Homes, a library staffer said, “These kits are essential for providing our patrons with a certain level of comfort that we feel everyone deserves.”
“After learning about the feedback from the DCPL and their need for essential hygienic items for those experiencing homelessness, we were motivated to assemble HomeAid CareKits for them to distribute. We were able to complete the assembly of 500 kits with ease while bonding as a team! This experience brought our team closer together and we really enjoyed the afternoon with HomeAid. We look forward to continuing our involvement with HomeAid in their future endeavors!” said Becca Barnes, Davidson Homes Director of Sales.
The HomeAid CareKits program was established locally in partnership with Bank of America in 2014. Since that time, HomeAid Atlanta has packed and distributed more than 17,500 HomeAid CareKits.
Davidson Homes’ CareKits packing event kicked off HomeAid’s 2024 community engagement programs. Last year, along with work on seven major construction projects, HomeAid volunteers completed more than 4,000 hours of service over 13 HomeAid Care Days (hands-on volunteer work days), packing 3,000 HomeAid CareKits, and more. This year, HomeAid volunteers will pack 5,000 CareKits and complete ten or more Care Days.
