Caring for Atlanta Children’s Shelter
Atlanta – July 6, 2022 – Established in 2001, building industry nonprofit HomeAid Atlanta has a mission to help people experiencing or at risk of homelessness build new lives through construction, community engagement, and education. Among HomeAid’s community engagement initiatives, Care Days are hands-on volunteer workdays providing repairs and upgrades to housing and homeless service facilities. On June 24, volunteers from David Weekley Homes and BOMA Georgia joined a HomeAid Care Day at Atlanta Children’s Shelter (ACS).
Nearly 30 volunteers tackled jobs throughout the facility including painting three offices, organizing a donations closet, rebuilding pantry shelving, assembling a new toy shed for the playground, and much more. The efforts of these hard-working volunteers made a major impact, providing savings of $7,500 for ACS. This money-saving support allows ACS to focus less on maintenance issues, and more on providing family services, including day care, to families experiencing homelessness with young children under the age of five.

“We are so grateful for the incredible opportunity to have a HomeAid Care Day at Atlanta Children’s Shelter! It was a fantastic experience to be surrounded by a large team of volunteers committed to improving our facility to help us continue to achieve our mission,” said Allison Griffith, ACS Early Childhood Education Director. “The ACS Early Childhood Education Program is especially grateful for the storage and organizational improvements the HomeAid team made. From freshly painted rooms to new shelving and cabinetry in several closets and our pantry, along with a completely transformed donation closet, we now have safer and brighter spaces and can accept more in-kind donations for the children and families we serve.”
BOMA Georgia and David Weekley Homes volunteers sorted and bagged thousands of donated clothing items and more, transforming the shelter’s donations closet.
Along with their sweat equity, David Weekley Homes provided a financial donation of $7,500 through their David Weekley CARES fund to make this work possible. “We are so grateful for our friends at David Weekley Homes! Their financial donation and skilled volunteer team made it possible for us to achieve everything on the ACS wish list, including installing a tiny toilet for potty training,” said HomeAid Director of Community Engagement Karen McLane.
HomeAid Atlanta is a nonprofit organization founded in 2001, with a mission to help people experiencing or at risk of homelessness build new lives through construction, community engagement, and education. HomeAid builds, renovates, and maintains facilities for nonprofits serving people experiencing homelessness.
